Camera Case

E-mail Print PDF

I have a fantastic Canon Rebel T1I camera, but I have a horrid habit of "tossing" it into my bag much like I did my far-less-expensive 5mp one I used to use.  I searched but was unable to find a simple camera cover that I liked, so I made one.  I am making the pattern and steps available to anyone else who might want to make something similar.

The pattern is straight forward and can be found on page 1 and page 2.

You will need less than half a yard of an outer-covering fabric, less than half a yard of an inner-lining fabric, and about half a yard of padding fabric. I used a black corduroy for the OUTER, a pretty red and black cotton print for the LINING, and a blue quilting backing for the PADDING.

Pay attention to where the fold lines are for these fabrics. They are not always parallel with the grainline.

I wanted to make sure my case was particularly well padded, so I doubled the blue and added some quilting to make it easier to handle.  You could do the same with a couple layers of fleece.

After tracing out the stitch lines on all fabrics, add 1/2" seam allowances and cut out the pattern pieces.

Baste the blue PADDING to the red LINING fabric, stitching in the seam allowances, and trim the excess bulk of the PADDING.

On the OUTER fabric, there are two tucks that help shape the front of the case. Pinch them, make sure they line up, and then stitch them.  Do the same thing on the INNER lining.

Pin the front of the case to the base, matching C and edges on the OUTER fabric.  Stitch.  Repeat for the INNER lining.

Pin the top of the OUTER fabric to the base and sides, matching A and >. Stitch.  Repeat for the INNER lining.

Turn the OUTER fabric right side out.

Put the OUTER fabric into the INNER lining, with right sides together, and pin them matching seams and edges.

Stitch, leaving the short end of the top open (at the bottom of this photo).

Now the camera case has to be turned out through that opening.  Be patient.  Depending on how thick your padding is, it might take some effort.

When done, fold the OUTER fabric up and over the open end, hiding the opening you just turned the case through.  Using a needle and thread, sew it closed with nice tiny stitches.

The last step is to add some hook-and-loop tape (sold under the brand name Velcro®).

NOTE: this camera case does not have it's own strap.  You should be careful when carrying your camera to be sure the strap is securely attached to the camera IF you leave the strap out of the case.
